Part 1. Perhaps Gov. Nikki Haley can explain why the South Carolina Department of Education and Aiken Technical College are listed Delinquent for not paying Federal Debt

It’s that time of year when the new Governor Budget proposal for state agenciesare given, and according to Federal Government records.

This time it’s not about South Carolina State University, but instead its two other state education entities being delinquent for not paying back a Federal debt. According to Federal Government records the winner of one of those delinquent Federal debts is listed as the South Carolina Department of Education.  According to USA government Vendor records the parent company, the state of South Carolina is the parent company. The second delinquent debt belongs to Aiken Technical College, a state-funded two-year college.

Fortunately for both this delinquent debt doesn’t prevent them from applying for grant assistance, but still raises a red flag on the stability of our public colleges if the South Carolina Department of Education can’t pay its debt.

According to federal government records the South Carolina Department of Education is the responsible party being award and applying for grants on the behalf of Trident Technical College but failing to pay back federal debt still owed.

The following was listed under government vendor data profile for awards given to the South Carolina Department of Education on the behalf of Trident Technical College:

For 2017 both four year public colleges and two year public colleges are seeking more money. Will once again, Governor Haley be about giving more money to Charter schools.  In an excerpt taken from the Center of Digital Education Converge it says the following about Nikki Haley’s 2016 budget proposal on Education: The governor’s proposals include:

$200 million a year in state borrowing to build or renovate school buildings
$19 million to raise salaries for school-bus drivers to $10.96 an hour from $7.46 and make those positions full time with benefits
$11.5 million to expand the statewide charter school district to accommodate seven new schools
$3.5 million to address safety hazards in districts

As you just read, not much focus on state funded colleges and universities, even though the state use them immensely to influence business commerce in the state.
