Illinois Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Distributing Pure Methamphetamine

MADISON, WIS. — John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Jonathan Barrera-Gomez, 29, South Beloit, Ill., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson to a mandatory minimum 10 years in federal prison for distributing methamphetamine in Rock County. Barrera-Gomez pleaded guilty to this charge on January 19, 2016.

Between June and October 2015, a confidential informant working with law enforcement officers purchased methamphetamine from Barrera-Gomez on 14 occasions. The total amount purchased was over one kilogram. An analysis from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s crime lab revealed that the methamphetamine was 100% pure.

Barrera-Gomez stored the methamphetamine at his home in Northern Illinois and drove to Rock County to distribute it. When officers executed a warrant at his home, they recovered cocaine, methamphetamine, a digital scale, a drug ledger, and two firearms.

Barrera-Gomez is subject to deportation to Mexico upon completion of his sentence.

The charges against Barrera-Gomez are the result of an investigation conducted by G-ROC, a task force formed through the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Safe Streets Violent Crime Initiative, to address gang and drug-related violence in Rock County through the coordination of investigations among local and federal law enforcement agencies. Its members include the FBI; Rock County Sheriff’s Office; Rock County District Attorney’s Office; Beloit Police Department; Drug Enforcement Administration; and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita M. Rumbelow.
