The Trump Organization was selected in 2012, but final agreement was reached in 2014.

According to Deputy Gelber the government expects to use the Post Office to lease out for a fee to government agencies. They understood in 2014 that some space would made into hotel suites, but the understanding was the government would be in control of the building for 2016. GSA’s mission is to provide space to partner Federal agencies at the best possible value. We do that in part by helping agencies to better understand how proper planning, use of shared space, and new work-space arrangements can help them to effectively fulfill their mission while improving their bottom line. This effort has required deliberate, upfront planning and coordination with agencies, and it has paid off with a number of successes that have helped reduce the government’s long-term real estate costs. For example, the Administration requested $100 million in Fiscal Year 2014 for GSA consolidation projects, with the goal of improving utilization by moving agencies out of costly leased space and into Federally-owned locations. Congress provided $70 million of this request. Using these funds, GSA is executing 19 projects in 13 states across the country that will save federal agencies $17 million in rent payments annually, reduce the Federal footprint by 507,000 square feet, and reduce the government’s leasing costs by $38 million. In Fiscal Year 2015, the Administration is again requesting $100 million in support of these worthwhile and cost effective consolidation efforts.

By October 2014, the Trump Organization came out with a plan to use the old Post Office to bid on rooms for Inauguration 2017. Trump Organization and Market Media Partners would form a partnership where globally people can bid on rooms for Inauguration 2017 by making suites to sell from the old Post Office.

In February 2012, Trump Hotel Collection was selected by the U.S. General Services
Administration (GSA) as the developer of the historic Old Post Office in the most sought-after
hotel redevelopment opportunity in the country. Trump International Hotel, Washington, D.C.
will feature 270 richly-furnished guestrooms, averaging more than 600 square feet, making
them the largest in Washington, D.C., with lofty 16-foot ceilings, soaring windows, beautifully
restored historic millwork, and glittering crystal sconces and chandeliers. In addition, two
extraordinary Presidential Suites will be located in the historic former offices of the Postmaster
General. At 3,500 and 5,000 square feet, the three-bedroom suites will be among the largest in
the country. The suites will feature: an oversized master bedroom suite with windows on three
exposures offering views of The Capitol and The Washington Monument; a formal dining room
with original fireplace; a pantry/kitchen for use by dignitaries during extended stays; a service
entry; walk-in closets; an exercise room; and a two-person shower and steam room.
